They're sweet, like cats, and they learn tricks.
It's like having a big, smart girbil, that runs around your house (when you let it) and takes bits of food and things back to it's cage.
Keep in mind, though, they only live about 2 years. Short life.
p.s. There are very few pets suitable for a 7 year old child to be alone with that won't defend itself, 'Parents'.Do rats make good pets and why ?

Do rats make good pets and why ?
yes! they are fun to play with. You can put them on your back and on your shoulder and they love it!
yes because they live long, once you get a hole in your sock give it to them to chew on, they are playful loving, they are easy to take care of. they like to cuddle. they are fun to train!
Rats make great pets, especially females, as long as you only get one. If you get two, they'll play with each other and ignore you... one will attach itself to you and be a good friend.
Here are the things I've enjoyed about my pet rats:
They generally have playful, friendly personalities.
They are smart and easy to train.
Females, especially, are generally clean and will use a litter box with a little encouragement.
They're small enough to be good apartment pets, but big enough to hold, carry around, and play with.
They're easy to feed- mine ate pretty much what I did, and especially liked fruits, veggies, pasta, and eggs.
Properly cared for, they have a lifespan of 3-5 years, which is average- good for rodents.
They're fun!
I have a pet rat, and she's one of the sweetest pets I've ever had. Rats are larger than mice, so they are easier to hold without running away or jumping away from you. They are affectionate if you show them proper care, and if you are good to them, they're sweet to you. They aresmart animals, so they are easily trained. My Mom had two rats that couldplay basketball with sytrofoam balls!
Those bred for pets are usually docile and entertaining. They tend to bite much less than hampsters. Life expetancy is about two years.
Yes, we have 2. One we can't handle, but she's pretty to look at. The other loves people. She jumps on the side of her cage whenever anyone walks past and climb right into your hand when you open it. They are a lot easier to handle than mice, hamsters, and gerbils. (I've had all at different points in my life) The females generally like to run around and explore more while the males are more relaxed. My rat loves to be petted. Also when I get the treat bag out and open it she gets really close and her eyes bug out because she's so happy. It's so cute. I've had many rats over the years and can say they are one of my favorite pets.
Yes, as long as you are responsible and commited. Rats are friendly, clean, and intelligent pets that make excellent companions. The males can be super cuddly and the females are very entertaining to watch. They are extremely social animals and have to be housed with a freind or two of the same gender (or speutered). Since they are so smart they need toys to keep them occupied and lots of time out to play. And never keep them in a glass tank, wire cages are the best choice. Ummmm, they are very easy to feed. You can mix your own grain mix and feed lab blocks or special dog food.
No! My daughter( then 7 at the time) had the sweetest rat until one day it turned mean( nothing provoked it, the rat was spoiled rotten and taken care of very well ) and almost bit the tip of her finger off...she had to go to the dr and they said if it wouldnt of been an animal bite ( since they dont sew those due to the possibility of infection) she would of needed at least 3 stitches in her finger because of the rat...needless to say we got rid of that rat real fast...lol ( Like within an hour of it biting her)
We also had to report the bite to the health department.
( Jay, domestic rats very rarely carry rabies according to the health department )
NO I THINK THEY ARE NASTY
No nasty pets to even have, smelly and just plain out gross. Why would anyone want to have a rat as a pet. I does not seam right or sound right at all. And just to hear the word ';rat'; just makes me sick! NEVER GET A RAT AS A PET they are nasty little freaks!
i own three rats and they r fun to play with. they dont stink if u accually clean their cage or give em a bath once a week. but be sure to give them accuall rat food instead of rabbit food. the rabbit food doesnt work to well. o and before they crawl in ur shirt b sure to declaw them.
i suggest u get 1
they wont turn mean if u play with them evry once in a while. they will love and play if u treat them right
Brilliant pets!
They are very intellegent, clean and unlike mice and hamsters they rarely bite. They are also very entertaining. I take mine out when I collect the kids from school and the whole playgroundful of kids flock round me to hold her and stroke her (while the mothers shudder!)
She also sits on my shoulder whilst I ride my bike and comes walking with the dogs. She comes back when I call her (which is more than I can say for the kids!), is house trained and wanders up to the cats then returns to her cage when she gets bored of them. The cats just look on in astonishment!
Just remember that if you have a rat that they are sociable creatures and are better off in pairs unless you have an awful lot of time to spend with them (and are willing to shrug off peoples looks of amazement when you are spotted riding a bike with a rat on your shoulder!).
I would say they don't because they bite they poop and they bite and knibble on things and could end up ruinig your clothes or something but if you want one bet it I say do you. If you want a rat for a pet why not but i would never get one as a pet.
Noooooooo...... I really, really don't like rats, they bite you and are all freaky looking, and if it's a boy they have big, hanging balls, YUCK.
Plus my sisters first rat died in my hands.
no they are nasty
