i got 2 young rats yesterday and one of them is very scared of me. the other one, the tinier one, seems okay and lets me hold it and pet her. however. when i give them treats and put it in front of them they don't take it. although i know they want it. what can i do?I just got rats yesterday and i have a few questions......?
talk to them in a low voice, usally hi-pitch voices scare them, and just leave the treats in their cage, near the opening of the cage and leave the cage open, and just stay away for awhile so they can get it. Let them get used to the cage being open, and make sure they dont scatter out and about. i doubt they will though =]
i have a rabbit, he used to be afraid of me, and i gave him little apple treats to make him come out, but he wouldnt, so i just left the treats in the cage with the cage open, so he knows nothing can harm him. And doing this will help them recognize and know your scent and get used to itI just got rats yesterday and i have a few questions......?
don't make fast, sudden movements, and avoid loud noises. Talk in a soothing voice when you're around them. Most rats will take treats when they're inside their cage, but it takes a while before they trust you enough to eat outside the safety of their cage. Another possibility is that they just don't like the treat you're giving them. Rats can be pretty picky and each one has their own unique taste.
Try just leaving the treat in the cage, and eventually they'll realize that they like it and will gladly take it from you :) Trust training rats can take time, especially ones from petstores that have been raised as feeder rats and not properly socialized. Try holding them a little every day. Start with short holding sessions, and go a little longer as they get more use to you. You can also try letting them run around on your bed or in a small room. They will eventually come over to you and crawl on you out of curiosity. These are all great trust training activities. Just be patient with them and they'll turn out to be great, affectionate pets :D
