Saliva perhaps, your rat may be choking. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do, they usually need to work it out themselves. It can't hurt to call or see a small animal vet though.
TAKE HIM TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY thats what happened to my rat and it died!~ take it NOW
