also i wud like 2 know if i cud use a pvc pipe for them 2 play hide n seek and cud i leave tht pipe n d jar(digging box)permanently in d cage or should i bring those out at times or d time they r asleep?Cud i use a glass jar/glass(fish)bowl/clean jar as a digging box for my baby rats?
ya u can use a pvc pipe 4 ur rats 2 njoy.its fully safe.just try 2 cover up any sharp edges with plastic tape.otherwise it shld b just f9.
do leave d pipe at a corner of d cage coz they just love running in n out thru tht.(hope u got a big cage).
yes u can of course use a glass jar or a bowl as a digging box but if its a clear jar/bowl then tht wud mk a gr8 site 4 u but not a v gud toy 4 ur rats 2 b in i hope.y i said so coz clear glass jars r transparent n will allow light 2 pass thru it which might really upset d moody rats as they lk dark, damp n messy playgrounds.try 2 use a opaque glass jar or a cardboard box or a wooden box instead of a transparent glass jar.(if its a glass jar do not leAVE IT late in d cage as they might start chewing it up)
all d best 2 u n ur rats!Cud i use a glass jar/glass(fish)bowl/clean jar as a digging box for my baby rats?
Well, i think it depends on how big the glass container is.
If it's just a jar, then i say no. A jar just isn't big enough to allow room for playing and frolicking, even for babies.
It would be helpful if you could give us the dimensions, or post a picture.
If it's big enough you can use it as a digging box. I would take it out of the cage if they aren't playing with it, because they would make quite a mess. Digging boxes are good in bathtubs, where the mess is easy to clean.
I don't exactly understand what your are saying with the whole pvc pipe question, could you rephrase and try spelling? that would help me better answer your question.
:D books books books
You could,
I'd advise to only have the digging box out when you are around them just in case.

Will two young male rats figh in a brand new cage?
i want rats but i ran into this problem with my dwarf hamstersWill two young male rats figh in a brand new cage?
Most likely not. Rats are MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more social than hamsters. Just to be sure, you should adopt (hopefully) the two rats as a pair. Don't adopt two rats who don't know each other, and if you do, introduce them outside of the cage first. Will two young male rats figh in a brand new cage?
All male rats do not fight each other. They will go through a little bit of dominance fighting in the beginning, but this is not real fighting and is not harmful. It is definitely the best idea to get 2 males from the same litter or the same group, as this almost guarantees no fighting, but it is not a prerequisite. It is also much easier if they are not the same size when you introduce 2 strange rats to each other. Preferably not a baby to an adult, but more like a 2 month old to a 1 month old. Thats what I did with my 2 boys and they have never fought each other.
Rats usually get along fine. They're social animals, which is one reason they make such great companions. Sure, they sometimes get into squabbles, but don't we all? If you adopt your rats together, they'll already be bonded so you shouldn't have any problem.
Only put them together in the same cage if they are from the same litter or have grown up together. All male animals are very dominant, and territorial. If they don't get along you will have to get a seperate cage.
male rats will always fight when they come of age.. its a dominance thingif you must have two males, put them in different cages

I am so confused what bedding should i use for my rats?
i have 4 male rats and have had them about 3/4 weeks now. i have gone through 4 different beddings sawdust, newspaper, dustfree paper cat litter and now carefresh. i am really confused because i have just read that care fresh is dusty!!!! can anyone tell me what is the perfect bedding to use!!! im fed up of hearing different things about beddings. what is 100% relaible!!!!!!!! please help me!!!!!!!!!!!I am so confused what bedding should i use for my rats?
Carefresh is perfectly fine. People say it is dusty, but that's a matter of preference. Some people just don't like the dust, bgut that doesn't make it bad for them. As long as your rats aren't sneezing a lot, it's fine!
The only BAD beddings are pine and cedar (aspen is not bad for them). Sawdust, as well, actually, because that can hurt their lungs.
I use fleece blankets, which I like because I save money on buying bedding. Just wash and reuse. :]I am so confused what bedding should i use for my rats?
As long as you avoid pine and cedar, anything else is your preference (and what your rats prefer of course).
Aspen shavings are nice, in my opinion, and so are the recycled-newspaper-pellet things, and corncob bedding is another alternative. I always gave my rats a big handful of toilet paper that they could use to shred and make a nest out of. So if you can afford it, and you like it, and they like it, and it's not pine/cedar, then you're ok.
I used to use aspen chips, but the vet told me that they're really bad for little critters. She suggested Carefresh, so that's what I've been using. It does seem a bit dusty when I dump it out of the bag, but my hamster loves it. I tried to save some money once and bought the imitation brand at Walmart, called Critter Care... Avoid it!! It's much cheaper, and comes in fun colors, but it smells horrible as soon as the critter pees on it. The Carefresh smells so much better. Good luck!
I use a product called ';Eco Bedding';. It has no dust, is very absorbent, and dries quickly. Your rats will love to nest in it, as well. I get mine at Petsmart and it's around $8 for the size of bag that I need for my three females which it lasts me about two cage cleanings, sometimes more.
Hi there. If you are having a dust problem with the regular Carefresh,I recommend Carefresh Ultra-it has less dust.My rats/hammies/piggies and rabbit love it-it's absorbent and much softer/more comfortable for them to snuggle up in.
Hey,
Aspen chips are acceptable but the absolute best (and what I use for my rats) is carefresh ULTRA.
It is a bit more expensive but it is extremely high quality and very absorbent.
Hope I helped

What should I get Rats or Rabbits?
Hey,
Well we've had Rabbits in the past but never Rats. I'm not sure which one to get. Can you help me choose? Or if you could think of a better pet (besides dogs, cats, fish, turtles, tadpoles %26amp; axolotls) please suggest it.
Thanks,
MattWhat should I get Rats or Rabbits?
It's a tough choice between rabbits and rats, but if I had to choose, I'd choose a rabbit. Just because rats aren't the cutest animals around, and they poop A LOT!!! But other than rabbits, I would honestly choose a snake, preferably a corn snake or a ball python, for amateur snake owners. If your not down with snakes or feeding them mice, chameleons or iguanas are fun to have. Preferably a Veiled chameleon. But if you don't like reptiles, you should get a hamster. They're cute, fun, and loving, and especially easy to take care of. They don't cost a lot of money and neither does their setup. If your going to get a hamster you should get a teddy bear hamster. They are very nice and cute. What should I get Rats or Rabbits?
I would say you should get rabbits, because you have had experience with them and know how to take care of them well. If you get rats, you might not know as much. Plus rats really shouldn'tt be around a house, because their bites are strong, and sometimes deadly. So, I think you should get a rabbit.
rats are great pets but I prefer rabbits. you can take your rats on walks on a leash or on your shoulder. rats are clean animals. but rats only live 2 or 3 years so it is not the best pet to get realy attached to. Ive had 4 rats and so far 2 rabbits. you should get what suits you best.
Well.. If you've experienced Rabbits before, You should go for Rats. But better be careful with em'. I've had Rats before and its tough to find em' once they're lost in the house.... Anyways.. I'd suggest Rats (The white breed). They look cute :). (''')(=^-^=)(''')
Go with rabbits. I have also had them before and I really liked them. Rats kind of carry a negative connotation as disgusting animals that eat your food, although I have never had pet rats.
Rabbits

I think you're done with the normal kind of pets..Get a white tiger!

Should i separate my rats?
i have a rat that is sneezing a bit, the vet said it was just the beginnings of a uri and gave me antibiotics for him. i have recently adopted another rat, should i separate them? or should i not worry because the infection never completely started?Should i separate my rats?
First of all, you've already brought the other rat in the same house, there is no point in separating them at this point.
3 week quarantine http://ratguide.com/health/basics/quaran鈥?/a> (separate air space)
If the rat you just adopted did not go through any quarantine before bringing him home (from a pet store) then you have exposed the resident rat to any illnesses. Whereas your newly adopted rat may not be having any symptoms your current rat will.
Rats have myco, all domestic rats do. It is the flare ups you are dealing with.
I highly recommend The Rat Health Care Guide http://www.ratfanclub.org/books.html.
Also, when visiting any store that has rats (you don't even have to go near them) it is advisable to wait 3 hours before going home to your rats.Should i separate my rats?
Yes, you should just incase it become any worse, you don't want to have 2 sick rats. Also what gender are your rats. If their opposite sex, I'd be expecting some 'grandchildren.' I really hope your rats feel better. Remember to stay involved with giving your rat some medicine, because we don't want the sickness to climax to the point of gaining another more serious disease. Also if you have the flu or some other sickness, as a human, I'd be careful being around your rats. Diseases/sickness can transfer from human to rat and vice verse. Hope this helps. Hope you rat feels better. And Happy July!
Well if ones a girl and ones a boy then you might want to separate them in case they plan on creating a bigger rat family. Unless you got them fixed. So anyways back to your question. Yes you might want to seperate them just to take percautions of the other one geting sick. Oh and HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!! =)
Yes, but they should be in seperate airways because the sickness runs though the air.DO you have a friend that can take him/her?
If not I guess you can keep them in a seperate room. But if the rat is already in your house don't worry about the sep. house thing.
If I were you I would seperate them just to be safe, but you probably don't have to. That's funny my rats sneeze like crazy too, but i took him to the vet and they said he's fine. Good luck with your sneezing ratty-boo
i woiuld seperate them.
for a while at least.
if one rat is sick and it is close to another rat, it will likely get the other rat sick too.
keeping them in diff. rooms for a little while is the best way to go :)
I would separate them. Better safe than sorry, especially since respiratory infections can be fatal for rats.icons for myspace

I have 3 male rats and one of them frankie is really starting to get thin can u tell whats wrong please?
he enjoys eating could it poss be going of food the weather or some eles they are well cared for all 3 of them are freindly i really needs some answers please put my mind at rest plzI have 3 male rats and one of them frankie is really starting to get thin can u tell whats wrong please?
Rats certainly don't eat as much when the weather is warm. They don't use so much energy keeping warm so don't need it. But that shouldn't mean he would be losing weight.
Is it possible he's the submissive one in the cage ? If so, it may be a case that the other two are not letting him have so much time at the foodbowl. If this is the case try putting two (or more) bowls of food in your cage, preferably one at the top and one at the bottom, so that Frankie has more of a chance to get his fair share.
You could try taking Frankie out of the cage and giving him some extras to try and put a little weight back on him. Foods such as advocado flesh (NOT the skin or stone), porridge made with soy milk, boiled or scrambled eggs, sardines are all good for fattening up rats.
If Frankie continues to lose weight I would recommend a visit to a qualified rat experienced vet to rule out any medical conditions which may be affecting him.
Hope this helped, and hope lil Frankie goes back to being a chunky squishey lil boy again xxx :-DI have 3 male rats and one of them frankie is really starting to get thin can u tell whats wrong please?
Thank you for your help but Frankie unfortunately was suffering pneumonia and unfortunately had to be put to sleep.
change the food maybe he does not like the food anymore
