Cud i use a glass jar/glass(fish)bowl/clean jar as a digging box for my baby rats?

also i wud like 2 know if i cud use a pvc pipe for them 2 play hide n seek and cud i leave tht pipe n d jar(digging box)permanently in d cage or should i bring those out at times or d time they r asleep?Cud i use a glass jar/glass(fish)bowl/clean jar as a digging box for my baby rats?
ya u can use a pvc pipe 4 ur rats 2 njoy.its fully safe.just try 2 cover up any sharp edges with plastic tape.otherwise it shld b just f9.

do leave d pipe at a corner of d cage coz they just love running in n out thru tht.(hope u got a big cage).

yes u can of course use a glass jar or a bowl as a digging box but if its a clear jar/bowl then tht wud mk a gr8 site 4 u but not a v gud toy 4 ur rats 2 b in i hope.y i said so coz clear glass jars r transparent n will allow light 2 pass thru it which might really upset d moody rats as they lk dark, damp n messy playgrounds.try 2 use a opaque glass jar or a cardboard box or a wooden box instead of a transparent glass jar.(if its a glass jar do not leAVE IT late in d cage as they might start chewing it up)

all d best 2 u n ur rats!Cud i use a glass jar/glass(fish)bowl/clean jar as a digging box for my baby rats?
Well, i think it depends on how big the glass container is.

If it's just a jar, then i say no. A jar just isn't big enough to allow room for playing and frolicking, even for babies.

It would be helpful if you could give us the dimensions, or post a picture.

If it's big enough you can use it as a digging box. I would take it out of the cage if they aren't playing with it, because they would make quite a mess. Digging boxes are good in bathtubs, where the mess is easy to clean.

I don't exactly understand what your are saying with the whole pvc pipe question, could you rephrase and try spelling? that would help me better answer your question.

:D books books books
You could,

I'd advise to only have the digging box out when you are around them just in case.

Will two young male rats figh in a brand new cage?

i want rats but i ran into this problem with my dwarf hamstersWill two young male rats figh in a brand new cage?
Most likely not. Rats are MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more social than hamsters. Just to be sure, you should adopt (hopefully) the two rats as a pair. Don't adopt two rats who don't know each other, and if you do, introduce them outside of the cage first. Will two young male rats figh in a brand new cage?
All male rats do not fight each other. They will go through a little bit of dominance fighting in the beginning, but this is not real fighting and is not harmful. It is definitely the best idea to get 2 males from the same litter or the same group, as this almost guarantees no fighting, but it is not a prerequisite. It is also much easier if they are not the same size when you introduce 2 strange rats to each other. Preferably not a baby to an adult, but more like a 2 month old to a 1 month old. Thats what I did with my 2 boys and they have never fought each other.
Rats usually get along fine. They're social animals, which is one reason they make such great companions. Sure, they sometimes get into squabbles, but don't we all? If you adopt your rats together, they'll already be bonded so you shouldn't have any problem.
Only put them together in the same cage if they are from the same litter or have grown up together. All male animals are very dominant, and territorial. If they don't get along you will have to get a seperate cage.
male rats will always fight when they come of age.. its a dominance thingif you must have two males, put them in different cages
maybe...

I am so confused what bedding should i use for my rats?

i have 4 male rats and have had them about 3/4 weeks now. i have gone through 4 different beddings sawdust, newspaper, dustfree paper cat litter and now carefresh. i am really confused because i have just read that care fresh is dusty!!!! can anyone tell me what is the perfect bedding to use!!! im fed up of hearing different things about beddings. what is 100% relaible!!!!!!!! please help me!!!!!!!!!!!I am so confused what bedding should i use for my rats?
Carefresh is perfectly fine. People say it is dusty, but that's a matter of preference. Some people just don't like the dust, bgut that doesn't make it bad for them. As long as your rats aren't sneezing a lot, it's fine!

The only BAD beddings are pine and cedar (aspen is not bad for them). Sawdust, as well, actually, because that can hurt their lungs.

I use fleece blankets, which I like because I save money on buying bedding. Just wash and reuse. :]I am so confused what bedding should i use for my rats?
As long as you avoid pine and cedar, anything else is your preference (and what your rats prefer of course).

Aspen shavings are nice, in my opinion, and so are the recycled-newspaper-pellet things, and corncob bedding is another alternative. I always gave my rats a big handful of toilet paper that they could use to shred and make a nest out of. So if you can afford it, and you like it, and they like it, and it's not pine/cedar, then you're ok.
I used to use aspen chips, but the vet told me that they're really bad for little critters. She suggested Carefresh, so that's what I've been using. It does seem a bit dusty when I dump it out of the bag, but my hamster loves it. I tried to save some money once and bought the imitation brand at Walmart, called Critter Care... Avoid it!! It's much cheaper, and comes in fun colors, but it smells horrible as soon as the critter pees on it. The Carefresh smells so much better. Good luck!
I use a product called ';Eco Bedding';. It has no dust, is very absorbent, and dries quickly. Your rats will love to nest in it, as well. I get mine at Petsmart and it's around $8 for the size of bag that I need for my three females which it lasts me about two cage cleanings, sometimes more.
Hi there. If you are having a dust problem with the regular Carefresh,I recommend Carefresh Ultra-it has less dust.My rats/hammies/piggies and rabbit love it-it's absorbent and much softer/more comfortable for them to snuggle up in.
Hey,

Aspen chips are acceptable but the absolute best (and what I use for my rats) is carefresh ULTRA.

It is a bit more expensive but it is extremely high quality and very absorbent.

Hope I helped

What should I get Rats or Rabbits?

Hey,

Well we've had Rabbits in the past but never Rats. I'm not sure which one to get. Can you help me choose? Or if you could think of a better pet (besides dogs, cats, fish, turtles, tadpoles %26amp; axolotls) please suggest it.

Thanks,

MattWhat should I get Rats or Rabbits?
It's a tough choice between rabbits and rats, but if I had to choose, I'd choose a rabbit. Just because rats aren't the cutest animals around, and they poop A LOT!!! But other than rabbits, I would honestly choose a snake, preferably a corn snake or a ball python, for amateur snake owners. If your not down with snakes or feeding them mice, chameleons or iguanas are fun to have. Preferably a Veiled chameleon. But if you don't like reptiles, you should get a hamster. They're cute, fun, and loving, and especially easy to take care of. They don't cost a lot of money and neither does their setup. If your going to get a hamster you should get a teddy bear hamster. They are very nice and cute. What should I get Rats or Rabbits?
I would say you should get rabbits, because you have had experience with them and know how to take care of them well. If you get rats, you might not know as much. Plus rats really shouldn'tt be around a house, because their bites are strong, and sometimes deadly. So, I think you should get a rabbit.
rats are great pets but I prefer rabbits. you can take your rats on walks on a leash or on your shoulder. rats are clean animals. but rats only live 2 or 3 years so it is not the best pet to get realy attached to. Ive had 4 rats and so far 2 rabbits. you should get what suits you best.
Well.. If you've experienced Rabbits before, You should go for Rats. But better be careful with em'. I've had Rats before and its tough to find em' once they're lost in the house.... Anyways.. I'd suggest Rats (The white breed). They look cute :). (''')(=^-^=)(''')
Go with rabbits. I have also had them before and I really liked them. Rats kind of carry a negative connotation as disgusting animals that eat your food, although I have never had pet rats.
Rabbits

more cuter
I think you're done with the normal kind of pets..Get a white tiger!

Should i separate my rats?

i have a rat that is sneezing a bit, the vet said it was just the beginnings of a uri and gave me antibiotics for him. i have recently adopted another rat, should i separate them? or should i not worry because the infection never completely started?Should i separate my rats?
First of all, you've already brought the other rat in the same house, there is no point in separating them at this point.

3 week quarantine http://ratguide.com/health/basics/quaran鈥?/a> (separate air space)

If the rat you just adopted did not go through any quarantine before bringing him home (from a pet store) then you have exposed the resident rat to any illnesses. Whereas your newly adopted rat may not be having any symptoms your current rat will.

Rats have myco, all domestic rats do. It is the flare ups you are dealing with.

I highly recommend The Rat Health Care Guide http://www.ratfanclub.org/books.html.

Also, when visiting any store that has rats (you don't even have to go near them) it is advisable to wait 3 hours before going home to your rats.Should i separate my rats?
Yes, you should just incase it become any worse, you don't want to have 2 sick rats. Also what gender are your rats. If their opposite sex, I'd be expecting some 'grandchildren.' I really hope your rats feel better. Remember to stay involved with giving your rat some medicine, because we don't want the sickness to climax to the point of gaining another more serious disease. Also if you have the flu or some other sickness, as a human, I'd be careful being around your rats. Diseases/sickness can transfer from human to rat and vice verse. Hope this helps. Hope you rat feels better. And Happy July!
Well if ones a girl and ones a boy then you might want to separate them in case they plan on creating a bigger rat family. Unless you got them fixed. So anyways back to your question. Yes you might want to seperate them just to take percautions of the other one geting sick. Oh and HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!! =)
Yes, but they should be in seperate airways because the sickness runs though the air.DO you have a friend that can take him/her?

If not I guess you can keep them in a seperate room. But if the rat is already in your house don't worry about the sep. house thing.
If I were you I would seperate them just to be safe, but you probably don't have to. That's funny my rats sneeze like crazy too, but i took him to the vet and they said he's fine. Good luck with your sneezing ratty-boo
i woiuld seperate them.

for a while at least.

if one rat is sick and it is close to another rat, it will likely get the other rat sick too.

keeping them in diff. rooms for a little while is the best way to go :)
I would separate them. Better safe than sorry, especially since respiratory infections can be fatal for rats.

he enjoys eating could it poss be going of food the weather or some eles they are well cared for all 3 of them are freindly i really needs some answers please put my mind at rest plzI have 3 male rats and one of them frankie is really starting to get thin can u tell whats wrong please?
Rats certainly don't eat as much when the weather is warm. They don't use so much energy keeping warm so don't need it. But that shouldn't mean he would be losing weight.

Is it possible he's the submissive one in the cage ? If so, it may be a case that the other two are not letting him have so much time at the foodbowl. If this is the case try putting two (or more) bowls of food in your cage, preferably one at the top and one at the bottom, so that Frankie has more of a chance to get his fair share.

You could try taking Frankie out of the cage and giving him some extras to try and put a little weight back on him. Foods such as advocado flesh (NOT the skin or stone), porridge made with soy milk, boiled or scrambled eggs, sardines are all good for fattening up rats.

If Frankie continues to lose weight I would recommend a visit to a qualified rat experienced vet to rule out any medical conditions which may be affecting him.

Hope this helped, and hope lil Frankie goes back to being a chunky squishey lil boy again xxx :-DI have 3 male rats and one of them frankie is really starting to get thin can u tell whats wrong please?

Why does bansky uses rats and monkeys as motifs?

Rats and Monkeys are typical laboratory test subjects. He compares their mode of existence to that of humanity, mocking society as one big laboratory with automated and conditioned living.

What is buck grease i have 4 male rats and dont know what that is?

It is normal for non-castrated bucks to have a yellowy orange grease on their backs, commonly nicknamed buck-grease. This is related to testosterone in the system and is not easy to remove by washing. Bucks really seem to vary the levels of buck grease that is normal and diet can help keep the coat glossy and looking less greasy as well. What is buck grease i have 4 male rats and dont know what that is?

    Are there rats in doritos?

my friend's teacher said that there are rats in doritos because they get ground up with the corn. Anybody know if this is true??Are there rats in doritos?
    lol... not true.

with the cleaning and screening process... rats are too big and will be screened out.

However, I can see beetles and bugs getting into the Doritos.

It don't bother me... it all gets cooked and it just means more protein. :-) lolAre there rats in doritos?
According to studies done by the CDC and FDA, there may be a rat ground up into several hundred bags of Doritos. Along with trace amounts of bugs, grass, dirt, animal dung, etc. But if you are worried about eating Doritos because of that, then ask you teacher how much animal dung is present on a fully cleaned vegetable.

Answer: More than in the bag of Doritos.
OH the crazy things teachers will say to students. Don't you think that Doritos would have been investigated by some large news group if they were truly grinding and roasting rats w/their corn? I'm sure they have a margin for error and bugs and stuff probably get in but every commercially made product have limitations for ';incidental'; ingredients. Rats in doritos.. that is a good one.
LOL when I was in third grade my teacher said the same thing about peanut butter. So of course I didn't eat it for years after wards.

The truth of the matter is that there are probably traces of all kinds of nasty creatures in out food. There is no way to avoid it. For crying out loud the average American eats like 5 spiders a year in their sleep and we're all still alive... and trace amounts of rat isn't going to kill anyone.

    Disgusting-yes unavoidable-no.

Don't let your teacher worry you..if you like Doritos keep on eating them! The cholesterol is way more dangerous than the trace amounts of critter in them anyway! ;)
ew i hope not i ate a bag today :S i betta go 2 the doctor to get checked out

  • What should i feed my snakes chickens or Rats?

with a burmese python rabbits would be better. you can get them online at rodentpro.com they are frozen. also sometimes locally owned pet stores will also sell them. What should i feed my snakes chickens or Rats?
Well that depends on what the size of your snake is. Also what species of snake do you have? Rats are usually a lot easier %26amp; cheaper to buy if you have a local rat/mouse breeder or you can purchase online from places that sell them frozen. I personally by bulk of anywhere from a few dozen of one size to 500 of another size, but I also have several reptiles of various sizes. Chickens are ok to feed every once in awhile, but it usually is not recommended as a staple diet. I do buy chicks %26amp; quail to offer periodically as a little something different, but most snakes with refuse if it does not look or smell like their normal food source. The best tip to know if you are feeding the apporpriate size is look at your snake, and see the largest part around your snake (the girth), then buy a rat/mouse/chick/quail/guinea pig/rabbit of about the same size, but not larger. After your snake eats you should just see where the food is in the stomache, it should not be too big of a bilge, or it can cause internal damage %26amp;/or reguritation, which either can lead to death or a very ill snake. Hope this info helps you out some. :0)What should i feed my snakes chickens or Rats?
I'd stick to rats unless the snake becomes so large that you'd have to feed a bunch of rats. I know people who feed chicks occasionally, but I've heard that the feces after feeding chicks is very runny and smelly. Most likely to the higher fat content. It's cheaper and easier to feed frozen/thawed rats. They are more easily obtained and there is no benefit to feeding chicks.

Any Moms or Dads whose children have pet rats?

What were your initial thoughts when your child asked you for pet rats? Had they done their research? Did they beg? Has your opinion on rats changed since you got the rats?

Did your child eventually stop taking care of the rats? Did it become your responsibility?

Do you enjoy spending time with the rats? Have you gotten more rats since the first rats?

Thanks for all who answer.Any Moms or Dads whose children have pet rats?
Rats are highly intelligent, trainable, less fast than other rodents, quieter than some, soft, affectionate and chew less than other species.

I work in a pet store and I'm ALWAYS recommending rats and degu's for children. Sadly to many people want hamsters which are more likely to bite for many reasons and much more strongly nocturnal.

However, most children are blocked from getting a rat because the mother has an issue with tails.

The majority of people will keep a pair of females or a single male. (No babies please). Get them young so you train them the way you want them. And I urge you, EVEN if your child is responsible for the care of the rat, PLEASE supervise it to make sure the cage is properly cleaned and food and water done properly.

And please, even if you and your child think its an easy pet to take care of. PLEASE research their care in a book rather than just hoping internet advice is correct. Ask people in more than one pet store as well.

Good LuckAny Moms or Dads whose children have pet rats?
No, my husband is allergic. But get him a gerbil inseat, they are better.
rats are kool little creatures to have as pets. i used to raise and sell them and all of mine were tame. the kids liked to have me bring them to school for show and tell. the kids cleaned out the cages and fed them 90 percent of the time and they played with them all the time too.
my kids and i had a pet rat once and for awhile it was ok, she was nice and never hurt the kids and we could play with her for hours....we took really good care of her and kept her and her cage really clean and somehow she ended up getting some kind of lice and we had to get rid of her so be carful if you do get one
Hmm, I did end up with a pet rat once. Incidently tried to feed the big snake twice and she just wouldn't eat the damn thing. so I chucked him outside....figured he'd faced death twice and lived so he deserved to be free. But he wouldn't leave, stayed right next to the dog house...being captive bred with winter coming on I felt badly for him. So, we made him nest of reminant carpet and he fed off the dog food and water and we named him Charles. He did well for some time, but at some point he disappeared and the dog tore up his nest...apparently done sharing food. Having dealt with many rats (as snake food mostly). They are actually friendly curious pets, that a great number of people just adore (I've not really shared the attraction but must admit to digging Charles a bit and missing seeing him drive the cats nuts). As far as the kids go, any child may lose interest in any pet. If they are at least 8-9 years old, I think they handle responsibility better. Younger than that you'd have to be your own judge of your child. But as far as rats in particular....they are fairly easy loving pets although less loyal and playful than a dog and not as maintanence free as a cat (they crap and make messes everywhere....not the brightest of pets).

    Good Luck
She has a pet hamster. She did basically stop taking care of it and lost it. I took it for awhile and then made a chart. She now has it back.. if she gets too many strikes on her chart, I will give the hamster to someone (put it in the classifieds). If she gets 20 strikes for taking care of it, she gets a prize and starts a new sheet over. I am kinda attatched to that thing.. he is tame
I had 2 rats, but not because of my kids...because of my husband..lol. But he ended up going out of town to work, so they ended up being my responsibility. My 3 boys didnt really pay too much attention to them. The rats are both dead now, and I wouldnt get anymore.
I got my son 2 rats a year ago i dint really have a problem with them after talking with rat owenrs i just could not get over the tail.rats make great pets and are great with kids you can actully let them roam and they will go back to there cage.I now look at rats in a diffrent way a good one.i am the one who cares for the rats but my son is young only 6.i do injoy spending time with them the only thing is they dont live long get them as babys handle them alot and get 2.
We got my son a hairless rat a few years ago. He didn't beg and he took really good care of it (he was probably 7 or so at the time). No matter how clean he kept the cage it always smelled kinda strange to me so that wasn't a good thing. He would cover the cage at night to try to help keep it warm, but it got unexpectedly cold one night and the rat died. It didn't change my views on them, I never really minded them and had one when I was younger. We did not get more as my youngest is severely autistic and he is freaked out by animals (he was too young to really notice the rat much when we had it so it wasn't an issue then).
My brother has a rat...He is eleven and I had to live with it for 1 month while my husband was on a trip. He begged, he did research, he got 1 more rat now to ';keep it company'; He has kept care of it well, I hate rats...

Why do rats pee so much?

i just got two femaleWhy do rats pee so much?
Its marking their territory. You should actually take it as a good thing if they pee on you because that means they like you. Rats will pee on each other if they like each other. You just got to clean the smelly areas a few times a week and once really well once a week. And they poo when taken out usually because they are nervous. As soon as they do it put them in their cage because that means they have had enough. Slowly you will be able to take them out longer and longer and it does get better. But some will never stop going all over the place. Why do rats pee so much?

what should we do %26amp; what are the health risks, short term.We have rats %26amp; mice in a house we just moved into %26amp; are freaked out to the possible health hazards.?
Rodents carry lots of diseases. You need to kill them as soon as possible. My suggestion:

    1. Make sure there are no alternate food sources around, such as pet bowls or open garbage cans.

    2. Lay out a bunch of rat poison. Brodifacoum is best, one brand that has it is D-Con.

    3. Look for another place to live!We have rats %26amp; mice in a house we just moved into %26amp; are freaked out to the possible health hazards.?
OMFG!!! You have my sympathy. At home about 18 years ago, they plowed a field near our aparment %26amp; both buildings had mice issues for MONTHS ugh...

I dont know if you have kids or pets or how bad the problem is but I would suggest calling a professional to come out to inspect the house %26amp; get it under control. If you own it, I would talk to the people/company you got the house from to see if they knew about it before you brought it. If you RENT it, the owner(s) are supposed to take care of this issue ASAP.

Honestly, I wouldnt stay in there until the house guests leave. They leave droppings everywhere, get into food (they EAT through cardboard %26amp; walls) %26amp; some of them bite. I would find relatives, friends or a hotel. Good luck! I hope this helps.

Why do rats lever press for beer? What in beer is reinforcing?

Studies have not been finitely conclusive. It was thought that it may be the calories, but when beer was tested against sucrose solution with the same calories, sucrose was more popular. To test the alcohol, studies tested beer against diluted ethanol (the same strength as the beer) and beer was more popular... In fact, lever pressing for ethanol decreased as the strength increased, so it is likely not solely the 'buzz'. The likely reason rats lever press for beer is a combination of the enjoyment of the taste and the subsequent mini-addiction that occurs. Food and water deprivation also increases their lever pressing. I have included some references, this is Iain McGregor's specialisation...Why do rats lever press for beer? What in beer is reinforcing?
Rats, like cocaine addicts, love the 'instant effects' of just about any sensory kick. Why do rats lever press for beer? What in beer is reinforcing?
They're addicted to the high they feel I would think. Like humans. You know, woozy, drunk, feeling good, lowered inhibitions also? I dunno, they're rats, they're conditioned.
    I'd press ANYTHING for Beer.
Rats or Beer it depends on how you interpret the things.

    Litter training rats question?

I'm not 100% sure if I'm getting rats, but I think if I can tell my mom about litter training, it will help her be more postive toward the idea.

I was thinking I could use a container that my rat could fit in with just a different bedding then the rest of their cage for a set up. After I get then, I will start moving their bathroom waste to the container to show them where to go. Is this a good idea?Litter training rats question?
You can try to litter train them, but it might not work. It takes time and you should place the litter box where they go to the bathroom at the most. You should definitely try it and if it works you will not have to change the cage as much.

I think i read somewhere that its supposed to be a good food for ratties, but a little expensive, i'm not sure if you live in the uk, or not, because i live in the uk, and use Wilkinsons own brand rat food, its really cheap to buy, but really good quality, its the only rat food my rats will touch, they go crazy for it, i mix it up with some sugar free cereals and a little dried pasta, and they go mad for it!XtraVital for rats, ist it any good?
I personally don't like using any sort of mix as the base of my rat's diet. I like to use a high quality lab block like Oxbow Regal Rats. Then I supplement it with fresh fruits and veggies, low fat proteins, the occasional bits of bread or past. You can also make a yummy grain mix called Suebee's rat diet.

    http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html

I find that using a mix as the base of the diet can lead to dietary insufficiencies if the rat selectively eats certain parts. During a discussion with my vet he agreed that a quality lab block is the best choice for the base of the diet.
It's just a fancy label, rats can eat anything, I personally buy the Pets at Home reggie rat nuggets for my rats, they love them! This food is slightly more expensive than the crappy hamster food most people buy for thier pets.
It's ok i guess, not highly recomended. It's just like any other rat food, and little difference. It's not really your money worth.

Do baby rats eat ther bothers when thay get older?

i have 10 baby rats and my friend told me that they will eat ether when they get older. pleas tell me if they willDo baby rats eat ther bothers when thay get older?
No, they will not. Sometimes the mother rat eats the young, but only if she knows they aren't of good health. However, I've raised rats forever - and have had many litters grow up together. Don't worry about it - :)Do baby rats eat ther bothers when thay get older?
I used to breed mice and the only time this happened was when the mother mouse would eat the young. but they didnt even have fur yet. so we had to separate the young mice after a couple days with the mother. but i have never heard of mice ar rats for that matter eat eachother when they get older. it wont happen. hope my edvice was useful.
Rats will cannibalize each other usually only if they are starving.

Can i use regular lined paper for my rats bedding(it will be shredded)?

can i? i dont wanna use wood and im allergic to care fresh beddingCan i use regular lined paper for my rats bedding(it will be shredded)?
Certainly, lined paper is no more toxic than white! They don't eat the stuff anyway.

I use shredded paper as bedding sometimes; it's pretty good, just doesn't control the odor as well as Care Fresh, so you change it a little more often. Can i use regular lined paper for my rats bedding(it will be shredded)?
Who knows what's used to dye it, do not use it. Also, the wooly type bedding is bad, animals can get toes stuck in it and actually constricted so that they drop off. The same with towels, the strings at the ends thata re frayed can wrap around a toe or leg and amputate it.
I'm not sure about the chemicals used in that particular paper (different companies might make their paper different ways?), but I, personally, avoid it for comfort reasons as well. I don't think it'll give paper cuts, but it's not the comfiest thing in the world.

You should try using fleece blankets or towels. I use fleece towels in my guys' cage. I just have 4 different ';rat towels'; that I rotate. They're cozy and I can just wash and re-use. The fleece may start to smell eventually, so you may need to replace it periodically.

EDIT: Just to note, fleece towels do not have little threads to tangle ratty feet. ;P
yes! try it. shredded paper cant give paper cuts! sheesh ;) jus go ahead and try it. if they dont like it? try something else thats new. if they DO like it? yay! :D
i think they made shredded paper for rodents but im not sure, but i think that like everyone else is saying it might cause paper cuts though......
Absolutely not!! Do you like paper cuts?
yes you can its a great idea so go ahead and do it hope your rat feels comfort
i hear its ok but paper does cut so u have to wry bout tht i suggest bedding fluff or wat ev u wanna call it its like cotton n its soft n comfy for them its always worked for me

  • What do rats like to do for fun?

I just got a rat and I have a cage for here with a few things for her to run thru but I was wondering if rats have any little ';hobbies';What do rats like to do for fun?
Good answers, but don't think they're really into woodworking ... although I've seen some chew up some sticks pretty good. Never seen one actually make anything of use .. unless you consider toothpicks something of value.

They'll play with almost anything, including your fingers. Very curious and doesn't take much to entertain them. Sight below has some ideas for playtime you may find useful along with good info on their care, feed, handling and health. What do rats like to do for fun?
My friends have a couple and they loveeee!! climbing up things.. so my friend made this box out of all these carboard boxes and it had all these levels and they climb all through it i it is really cool :) So they love playing with you, going on your ashoulders while you walk i know thats a favourite for my friends rats and they like to always be with you.. actually they are very friendly crechers the cutest one s are the dumbo that have thwe ears out at the sides :)
Many enjoy woodworking, but almost all enjoy scavenger hunts.
they like chewing, running, playing w/ cat toys, a ball w/ bells or in mazes they like playing with eachother and there human too!

    Dogs with rats and hamsters?

i am a proud owner of 3 rats, and a very proud teddy bear hamster breeder.

i have always been a dog lover, but my last dog i had was a beagle who died a year and a half ago.

so im looking for a dog, what breed should i get?

i dont really want a dog who will continuously try to get at my rats or hamsters. i could leave them in a different room though...

i am a fan of BIG dogs, and i have the room in my house and yard... but i dont know what kind of dog i should get!

    help?Dogs with rats and hamsters?
alot of shelters will have a person trained how to do this, to temperment test a dog with any other pet you have..you can call ahead at a shelter to ask if they do this, to be sure they do.Dogs with rats and hamsters?
GET a medium dog like a beagle cause if you put your other pets on a high shelf they cant reach it or a basset hound
Dobermans are good dogs, I have one and she is a big baby. If you do get a dog, try and get a dog that's not quite a puppy, just a little older and take out your rats, and show them to the dog. So the dog can get use to them and then it shouldn't be a problem because they won't be curious and try to bite.
I wouldn't recommend terriers, as they most likely will try to hurt your ';pocket pets'; (I don't like to call them rodents, it makes them sound as though they are nasty animals in street alleys, which they are not). You could get a little companion dog such as a Chihuahua or a Papillion. Although according to the ';encyclopedia of dog breeds'; a Norwich Terrier has a fair amount of friendliness towards other pets. It also says that the Boston Terrier is also very good with other pets.

But of course, you said you like big dogs, so here are a couple:

    Dalmations

    Collie (Regular, NOT BORDER!)

    German Shepard

Old English Sheepdog (Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds says this is a dog very good with other pets)

    Shetland Sheepdog (Very Good too)

    Those are just a couple
i have a german wire haired pointer n he talks to my rats through thier cage n wags his tail like mad so he's fine with them

How do i tell my landlord i have rats?

the contract says no pets in the house but rats do not stink they are good pets and i love them please no silly answers 10 points to best answer ore the answer that worksHow do i tell my landlord i have rats?
Nobody puts the jurisdiction they in on these questions. The laws in each province and state vary.

For example in Ontario Canada, it doesn't matter what the lease says, the statute governing tenancies (The Residential Tenancies Act) applies despite any agreement to the contrary.

Pets are permitted in Ontario. A Landlord can however bring an application the Landlord and Tenant Board if the pet is disturbing the landlord or other tenants (eg: a constant barking dog). How do i tell my landlord i have rats?
Are you already living there, or are you considering moving there?

If you are considering moving there, I would ask the landlord ';What are your rules on small pets that are always caged?'; So many people have a negative view on rats, I wouldn't even mention the species unless specifically asked.

If you already live there, you've made it this far, why ask now? They're not causing damage.
I would ask him if you could keep some rats in your apartment, but not actually mention that you have them. That or you could just not say anything about them at all. If the landlord comes to do a check in you apartment because he's suspicious, hide them at a family or friends house. Hope this helps any at all or at least gives you some ideas. Good luck and hope if he finds out you don't have to get rid of you precious rats!
I used to own rats and you are right they are great pets! Unfortunately a contract is a contract and if you tell your landlord you have rats he has the right to make you get rid of them or move out. I do not envy your situation cause either you have to chose to be dishonest and keep the rats a secrete or risk turning your life around. Maybe you can ask your landlord if small animals in aquariums are ok just to see where his or her head is at, I have experienced that they are not as apposed to these types of animals. Just don't tell them you have rats cause most people just classify all small rodents as rats anyway, cause they don't know any better. If they ok the small animal idea then you can live guilt free and safe from loosing your babies.
Call him up and explain how small they are, how they don't make noise, and I'd refrain from calling them rats. Call them rodents and promise not to take them out of their cage, or whatever you keep your rats in.
you make it sound like you have unwanted filthy rats. dont tell him in the words you asked this question..lol

    ';landlord... i have rats!!'; :))
well sorry but if the contract says no pets then u cannot have a pet.... And he has it down in writing because u most likely had to sign the contract
    ';Landlord....I have rats!';

    My rats got butterered popcorn?

They should be ok. If it was only one piece hey should be fine. You are right though popcorn is very bad for them due to the salt and butter but one piece wont hurt them.

    funfamilyrodentry.weebly.comMy rats got butterered popcorn?
They'll be fine. Butter isn't good for them but since it's not part of their regular diet I wouldn't worry. They didn't choke on the kernel part, which would have been my concern if our rats had done this.
In the wild rats are scavengers, so they're built to eat just about anything. While butter probably isn't GOOD for your rats, chances are they're going to be just fine.
i wouldn't worry too much- as long as they didn't eat a whole pack they should be fine.

How can i face my fear of rats?

Get one as a pet and let him crawl on you.How can i face my fear of rats?
get 1 cat...!!How can i face my fear of rats?
    kill them,
this is going to sound weird, but you need to make steps to hold one. first go to the pet store and look at them, then work up to holding one. I know someone who got over a spider thing like this.
Fall in love with one. There are plenty out there. LOL.
Ugh, why face it. Rats are icky things, with those two long yellow teeth in the front, beady dark bulgy eyes, pink wet nose and quivering whiskers. And that long thick scaly tail!!!!!

Unless you are afraid to leave the house because you may see a rat, I don't see the problem. I'm afraid of rats - cockroaches too - I never think about them at all one way or the other until I encounter one by surprise, then I scream like a lunatic and run away, arms flapping, eyes wide in terror. Gah!
don't they are disgusting. But seriously they are harmless if they're not wild.
Don't. Just avoid going anywhere that you might encounter them, just as I avoid going anywhere where I might see a snake.
try to think about rat dishes...
there is this new tech/software program that acts like a 3d simulation/virtual game that some psychololgists use to cure people of their phobias
buy one. an actual pet sold in pet stores, the ones that are bred to be pets and are not all carrying diseases and stuff...
Build a huge bonfire ... Put the rats on a stick ... Marinate them ... put them in the fire until crispy ... Eat them
get professional help, trying on your own is frustrating and can backfire
Get on the tv show Fear Factor
Get on 'Survivor'. You'll probably end up eating them.
Rats are generally harmless. Of course most of us get scared when they suddenly crawl on us.

But you can overcome this fear by keeping a rat as pet. In course of time not only you overcome the fear, but may begin to like rats.

My rats are STILL sick. :I what now?

so it seems my ratties are going to be sick forever. :'(

(the vet doesn't know what it is but i am pretty sure it's myco)

the first two weeks i had them they were on Sulfratrim. and now for about a month they've been on .05 ml of Baytril twice a day. their medicine finished today and they continue to sneeze and cough.

i thought that after all this medicine they'd be doing better...

so what now? has any rat owner out there ever experienced this before? what did you do?My rats are STILL sick. :I what now?
I had a very sick ratty who was sick for a long time.

My vet was good with dogs but not up on rats. We tried Baytril once a day for 3 weeks - no help. Tried Baytril twice a day for 3 weeks - no help. Tried Doxycycline AND Baytril TWICE a day for 3 weeks - all better and no sign of sickness months later.

One antibiotic is often not enough to knock a ratty illness on the head!

get your vet to prescribe both types - I think Doxy is called some other name in the US. Also Vibramycine is another antibiotic that is used with ratties, but for us after a long illness it was the Doxy Baytril combo twice a day that did the trick

My little ratty is healthy and happy and to look at her you would never know that she was so sick for so long %26lt;:3( }~~~

PS: I NEVER put any type of bedding shavings etc in with my ratties because the dust can irritate their airways. My ratties are litter trained and I only use recycled paper litter in an old plastic lunch box for their litter tray. Also, I ONLY use old cotton towels, handtowels, facewashers and teacloths as hammocks for my ratties and heavy cotton table placemats or cut up bathmats for cage floor mats and I change the floor mats DAILY and the hammocks every second or third day, wash it all in the machine weekly.

I also collect odd socks for my ratties to use for nesting material and change and wash them regularly as well.

Wood shavings especially should NEVER be used with ratties. Microscopic particles get into ratty's lungs and cause problems.

Mine love their nice clean soft fresh washed cotton bedding.

Do not keep your ratties in a drafty place, like near an open window or in an unventilated place, like an aquarium tank.My rats are STILL sick. :I what now?
try putting them into a dryer and warmer place like a sunny place for 3 to 4 hours a day in like a shallow box that high enough so that they wont crawl out and see how that works out, oh and one more thing try changing the bedding your using try ripped up toilet paper... Good luck with your rats!!!XD (you know what suks??? vets always say sumthing like i dont know what it is...they dont deserve the job...but i know how you feel)

Is this cage big enough for 2 rats?

    37cm high,

    64cm across

    44cm width

it has a platform thats half as long as the cage aswell. Is this cage big enough for 2 rats?
That cage is barely big enough for one rat. Each rat needs at least 2 cubic feet of space (about 0.06 cubic metres). Try something bigger.

Here's the cage calculator to help you calculate how many rats can go in a cage- http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.sht鈥?/a>

To all the other answers- rats are not guinea pigs or bunnies. They need more room to play and climb in. Rats are smart and do need a lot of room. The biggest cage that you can get is the best cage.Is this cage big enough for 2 rats?
you might want a little bigger. i also had two rats and i had a glass cage that was about a foot with length and about 6 cm width when i had my first rat. then i went to the store and got an addition to it that was steel and made of bars when i got my second rat, and it fit right on the glass one. the steel on had another floor that they got onto by a ladder, then about two more 4 cm floors that they could get onto with ladders also (the ladders are connected to the cage, not sold seperatly) and they seemed very happy with that. C:
i would say that u need a cage that is a little bit bigger than that... i had 2 rats that grew fairly large (fat) adn my cage was about 18 in high, 15 in wide and about 2 ft long and i think that they were a little bit crowded then... it is hard to tell b/c they are so small as babies

    good luck
    Yes it is big enough
i think that is a perfect size i had two rats before and there cage was around that size

    noo, its finee ,
    sounds fine =)
yea it should be big enough

Can rats have paper with ink on?

i know rats love to go in 'digging boxes' and was thinking of giving my rats one.

it would be easiest to just shred up old letters and stuff and use that (i know newspaper is bad) but i was wondering if this would be bad too??

i dont want to harm my rattiies.....but there is no chance my mum would let me shred un used paper and i just give them toilet paper for bedding.

would this be ok?? if not what could i use??

thanks....Can rats have paper with ink on?
No please don't use paper with written stuff or ink because when they chew the paper that has ink or pen and pencil written they could get sick because those stuff will harm them. Just buy bedding at any pets storeCan rats have paper with ink on?
Ink isn't lethal, although obviously you don't want them eating it. I would start out using brown construction paper (the ';safest';) for their box until they get used to it and realize that it's inedible. After that I'd say go ahead and use paper that's been printed on and newspaper. My rats have been plenty exposed to them and do shred them, with no ill effects yet. I highly doubt that ink contains many toxins and poisonous bits, considering how often people are exposed to it.

As someone else said, your rats will probably like soil more, although it will mean dirty rats. My rats ingnored the bucket full of shredded newspaper in favour digging up my potted plants. Darn creatures.
The ONLY type of ink safe for animals is soy ink. Many newspapers are actually switching to this environmentally friendly alternative, so SOME newspapers will be harmless. Your best bet is to actually call and ask the newspaper company about the ink they use. DO NOT use letters or pen ink type of paper, or anything glossy (unlike newspaper which is rough). And even things like paper towels and toilet paper are harmful because they all have been bleached to become white. Soy ink newspapers are actually the safes of all paper, however they might smear on the rats and turn them grey.

And an even better material for a digging box is actual soil! I don't think paper is nearly as fun as dirt and grass, my rats love it! Read the instructions here http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm#diggin鈥?/a>
no the ink is bad, and can potentially kill them or if you are mating them cause the babies to have birth defects, you can use paper towels for them or toilet paper, also pet stores sell a form of recycled shreded paper that you can use just for this, however magazines, letters, and handwritten items all pose potential harm, and for your rats sake dont chance it.
I wouldn't recommend newspaper but only because of the amount of ink, if you had the time and patience to cut off the edges then maybe. But lets face it, even rat owners have something resembling a life.

I use torn up kitchen and toiled paper with wool, bits of fabric, cardboard, anything really. The wool is a favourite with the rats who tend not to dig but to fall asleep in it.

Try looking through this link, I've found it really helpfull when I've had questions and they have some great ideas for other ratty toys.

    http://www.dapper.com.au/fun.htm
ink in paper aint good for them but not sure about bog roll. there aint no ink in bog roll as long as its plain white with no pics or coor involved.

    Girrbles, are another choice.

Chinchillas are good but they kinda do their own thing so it would be okay to leave them home in the cage but ive heard they chew things like any other rodent. so i would watch it when you take it out.

yes . i have 2 mice and i keep them in a large 20 gallon tank

but that would be perfect for them
ummm i would hate it but what ever... they are rats.
    OH YES THAT'LL DO' ER
I saw that cage in my local pet shop a couple of years ago and was going to get it for my rats. I changed my mind as the bar spacing is huge and even my fattest male would have no problem getting through. Girls a lot smaller than boys so it would not be a good cage. The tube over the top worried me as well. It would be hard for the rat to use it effeciently and as someone said, it would be a nightmare to clean. Removing it would be difficult as it would leave 2 huge holes.

The cages I use at the moment are a Ferplast Furet Extra Large and Ferplast Brio Medium.
The bars might be too far apart. Rats can squeeze through bars if they are not close enough together.
it's nice but i would get a shallow forty gallon , rat will escape that thing
    Beyond Good!!!!
I think that it would work! I had a rat named buttercup! She passed away. She was so awesome! I think I seen a big cage like this only it was cheaper and it had 3 levels. ok go to www.jefferspet.com and in the search bar type in ferret cage. There are 2 different cages. here is another site I found before my beloved buttercup passed. Just thought you might wanna check it out! http://www.dapper.com.au

I hope I helped and have fun!
There have been two complaints about those attachable tubes from people on the rat forums. They love the cage but the tubes get very soiled with use and are hard to clean.

I have a cage very similar to your choice, no tubes. It's this one:

    http://www.rabbitstop.com/Merchant2/merc鈥?/a>

I added another full shelf and it's an awesome cage for male rats.

You will need to measure the bar spacing of ';your'; cage. A female rat will be able to squeeze through the bars if the spacing is 3/4 inch or bigger. If the spacing checks out, that would make a wonderful home for your girls.

If you have the time to keep the tubes clean, then by all means, keep the tubes on the cage. The tubes will certainly keep you and the girls entertained.

For more information on keeping rats as pets, please feel free to e-mail me (see my profile) and I would be happy to talk rats with you.

That Would Make A Great Cage For 3 Females but If They All Get Lonley Get A Male And See What Happens From There!
I think it would make a lovely home for the rats. But it also depends on the rats size. If you think that it will be to small try looking at bigger cages. GOOD LUCK AND DON';T GIVE UP!

    Undomesticated rats in daylight?

My folks have observed four rats visiting their bird feeder regularly. Two are brown, one buff-colored and the other has Chinchilla coloring on his underside. Isn't it unusual for rats to be out and about during the daylight hours? Could these rats be former pets? My folks plan to eventually trap and relocate them. I'm concerned that their presence may not be safe for the birds and dogs that also share the yard. Undomesticated rats in daylight?
Generally, rats are nocturnal, but if they are in an area they have learned is safe they will appear in daylight. They can vary in colour, so there's no reason to suspect they are former pets based on their being seen during the day or their colour. Indeed, it's unlikely that escaped or released pet rats would survive for very long in the wild - they would not know how to forage for themselves or evade predators.

Rats are no threat to birds or dogs, though they will eat birds' eggs if they find them. I would be more worried about the dogs harming them (though of course they'd have to catch them first!). I'm glad to hear your folks plan to trap and relocate them rather than just killing them as many people would.Undomesticated rats in daylight?
It's not unusual. The place where I work has a compost pile and if you walk back to it during the day you're tripping over all the rats.

I just woundering how rough do male rats get my boys from the same litter get quite rough somtimes i wonder if

they are just playing. this are my first rats . and iam a very nervous mummy. also they hate thier premixed rat food that you buy i give them plenty of veggies and they love them but hardly touch the rat food and i heard they need to eat a certian amount of that food.I just woundering how rough do male rats get my boys from the same litter get quite rough somtimes i wonder if
Male rats can get pretty loud, i think they do it moreso at certain times because of hormonal changes, etc (if they arent fixed). Let them work it out, just as long as there is no blood. No blood, no foul is what I say. They'll get scratches from time to time but hopefully not deep ones. Make sure they have enough room in their cage and hammocks and stuff to get away from each other when they need to. A GREAT place to check out is petshub.com/forums, its a pet forum place and they have a rat section where i often post, it is very educational.

As for the food, you should be feeding lab blocks such as Mazuri or Harlan Teklad. If you can't get this, you can mix their food on your own which i find it better because you can customize it. It's called ';Suebees Rat Mix'; you can find it at http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html

Make sure you arent feeding them anything with artifical coloring, seeds, or corn, as they can cause health issues and/or choking.

It's also good you're giving them veggies, they need their fresh food as well. The best is romaine lettuce, carrots, etc.

Good luck with your boys :) If you have questions you can email me at jhageman06@yahoo.com

Oh and stay away from nutriphase and kaytee! They have preservatives in them that are shown to cause cancer. Be very wary of any pet store food!!!I just woundering how rough do male rats get my boys from the same litter get quite rough somtimes i wonder if
Well, first off, rats as well as mice are very playful animals. even if they are alone they find some way of entertaining themselves by running around and such. Now that you say they are being ';rough'; this could and most likely is playful dominant wrestling. But if you do notice one of them is bleeding from anywhere, or if there is always one that gets picked on the most, then my suggestion would be to remove the aggressor out of the tank. If bleeding or no bite marks, or hair baldness is noticed i wouldnt be too worried.

    - As for food, im not sure where you are from, but the stores petco and petsmart should have a decent rat/mouse food. Don't go with the cheaper is better here. The quality of the food is the difference. I keep feeders for my snakes and feed mine - Kaytee - Supreme Rat and Mouse food. They seem to enjoy this. I also have added some of the Rat treats to this, or even trail mix, and dried fruit added should make them eat better. Veggies, lettuce, and even fruit are really good as well. But they should mainly eat their dry food.

Can rats eat raw pumpkin guts?

If so, how much is too muchCan rats eat raw pumpkin guts?
Yes and they love them! Raw is fine, but I roasted my seeds before I gave them to my girls and they really enjoyed them, just do not salt them! Salt causes heart disease in rats!

I got an idea from another Answers user, who said she gives a small pumpkin to her rats to ';carve';. She recommended that you start it for them. I haven't tried this with my girls yet, but I am positive they will have a blast with it!

They can have as much as they want. Pumpkin seeds are low in fat and just about any fruit or vegetable is good for them so you don't have to worry about them eating too much. But use common sense when you let them eat seeds. If you feel like they have had enough, just save the rest for later. Can rats eat raw pumpkin guts?
    Hi!

Yes, of course! They'll love raw pumpkin guts!

Try and judge yourself as what is normal - how much would be normal for you to eat? It'll be the same for ratties. You judge how much YOU think will be too much for them - you know them best!

    Lucky ratties! :)

Good luck and hope your ratties enjoy it!

Addition: EmmyJak, I gave my two a small pumpkin to carve and they LOVE it. Highly recommend it!
They can, I give my girls as much as they will eat in a day, which is about a tablespoon each.
rats can eat anything..and will !

My rats balls are bigger than mine!?

I'm so jealous of my pet rats balls! They are so huge and soft, not that I'm a rat molesterer, does anyone know why rodents seem to be so blessed with these perfect balls? My rats balls are bigger than mine!?
I'm not sure but rat balls are huge.If you got a kick out of that...you should see what me and my daughter saw on a horse the other day.My rats balls are bigger than mine!?
    Congratulate the rat! YAY Whiskers!
you should go play with a football and leave ratty alone.
Rodents have large testicles compared to their body size because they are affluent reproducers and need to make tons of sperm to make tons of babies. Rats can produce a litter of 10-15 babies every 3 weeks, starting when they are 6 weeks old (though in captivity, NEVER let your rat breed this early or this often!). Considering rats live 2-3 years, that's a lot of babies! Also, male rats often mate with more than one female, so he needs all the sperm he can produce to spread his genes around and create more little ratlets!
UM....... THATS WHAT YOU GET FOR USING STEROIDS?
my hamster has big nuts too. i think you notice them cos'compared to the rest of they're cute bodies it looks kind of odd..you know..small furry animal with big balls...mines always showing them off when he's asleep...talk about letting it all hang out!
    LOL......WTF?
HA HA HA! I think it's because they make a lot of babies and need a lot of sperm. At first the balls scared me, now I think they're kind of cute. I call them 'tail pillows'
I'm worried about you. Your question is why are rodents so blessed with this? Your question should be ';why do I have such small balls? I obviously have a serious problem and may not be complete male. Should I see a doctor?'; You are totally concerned about the wrong subject nutso.
    Um... Your a SICKO

Try looking online for breeders, as most pet stores do not carry hairless rats (and besides you wouldn't want one from most pet stores anyway). Some good sites with breeder listings include:

I saw some at petsmart today. I just got 2 new rats. you could try there if there is one in your area. they are pretty rare though.

Do rats poo and pee on you a lot? or how much?

tell me your experiences of ur rat and where u got them. (eg. a pet shop, a experienced pet shop, breeder or rescue etc)

and are the rats from average pet shops bad tempered?

    how old are they usually?

p.s. i dont want to ask the people trhat work there because they probably know jack ****Do rats poo and pee on you a lot? or how much?
I got a couple of my rats from an exotic pet shop. My neurotic dumbo rat has never marked me. My oldest rat took a few months before she stopped marking me. My 2 babies mark where they walk sometimes, but not too often. Usually when rats are handled regularly they will learn not to mark you. I've never actually been peed on, just marked. I can carry my oldest rat around with me all day (i usually take her to the beach with me) and she won't poop or pee until I put her down. Rats will poop a lot when they are nervous or scared, so be aware of that. Otherwise they should very rarely poop on you.Do rats poo and pee on you a lot? or how much?
yeh your right, petstore people generally dont know anything.

i got my 2 rats at 6 weeks old from a lady who bought a rat from a pet shop and it ended up being pregnant.

i really don't know how old they are, if you get them from a pet store get them as young as possible this way it wont take as long for them to get use to you, plus older rats that have been in a pet shops wont be very friendly.

so either get them from a experienced breeder (make sure the breeder is a good breeder) or a rescue

i have never delt with rescue rats but generally they are in good condition and are friendly (it also depends on the rescue place)

they will only really pee on you if they are scared and they poop alot when scared too (like when first handling them). but if you litter train them well you will hardly get peed or pooped on.

good luck, have a great time getting rats, they are perfect pets =]
Well, rats will most likely pee and poo on you a lot at first, but strangely, that's their way of saying that they like you. :] After a few months of so, their peeing and pooping on you will decrease. ;) I got my rats on November 2nd, 2007 at Petsmart (NOT PETCO) Well, it depends on the rat stores and the rat's personality, but if they're bad tempered it usually just from being scared. And again, it depends on the rat store, but younger rats are usually sold. Sometimes older ones if they've been there for a while. ;)

    RATS ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!! :D *hugs*
    only til theyre potty trained.

pet shop rats are all different, i had some very nice rats from a pet shop, but theyre really timid at first plus THEY COME FROM EVIL RODENT FARMS WHERE THEYRE ALL BRED IN TINY TANKS WITH 1 MALE 3 FEMALES AND SHITLOADS OF BABIES ALL CRAWLING OVER EACH OTHER AND THERES ROWS AND ROWS OF THOSE TANKS! evil *******! get your rats from some where nice!
i got them from a experienced pet shop . no thy are not bad temped only if you treat them wrong when you first get them. well they are normally under 2.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuxX0x7LI鈥?/a>
it should happen every once and a while but if it happens more then once there sick or afraid of you or something around you.
They don't usually pee or poop on you they mainly do that in their cage.

    Do rats make good pets?

I've wanted a rats for about 2 yrs now. I've done research and have read tones of books. One problem my mom hates rodants, so how do i convince her that they are good pets? Another problem what breed to get and do i have to get two?Do rats make good pets?
I had a few pet rats, only one at a time so I don't think you have to have 2. They were each wonderful pets! Very smart, very clean.Do rats make good pets?
Rats make awsome pets. my friend had some and they were really fun. :]
Maybe learning to spell would convince her to let you have pets.

Yes you have to get two. A single rat is much more likely to die young because they usually mope around most of the day when they are alone and their immune systems won't be very strong if all they do is sleep or act lethargic.

Any breed, they are all the same animal. Dumbos and standards can be together, any coat type can be together. If you get a hairless be sure to get a furry rat for the second so the hairless can stay warm. Just be sure they are both the same gender.
i had mice but not rats.

two of mine died of cancer and one of them died of a cold.

I HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM: I have rats in my house, What should I do?

Rather than poison them and have them die and stink up your house, try traps. I have traps that i bought at the local hardware store that only cost a few dollars each, and are very effective for catching large rodents. The traps are a rectangular box style trap made from very hard wire. One end of the trap has a door on it that allows the rat to enter the trap but once inside is unable to get back out. These traps can also be reused as many times as you need. Very simple design, but works very well. Put a couple of these up in your roof. Rats are scavengers so it wont take them long to sniff out whatever scraps you choose to put inside. Once inside you just pick up and carry the trap by the handle and dispose of them however you choose. Its better than the awful smell your left with if you poison them and they die up in your roof or inside a wall cavity. Give it a try, i know it works. :)I HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM: I have rats in my house, What should I do?
Wow, I had rats, too. One of two things got rid of them for me. It was either the pellet poison I poured in every hole I could find that killed them. Or it was cleaning up the brushpiles and all where snakes were---got rid of the snakes about the time they dissappeared, too.

The last time I saw one, I was on riding lawnmower behind house, had shorts on, naked legs. When I made a cut thru grass in back yard, a rat jumped up from a hole as high as my leg on that side of mower. I think he and I both almost died. I found later that they had tunnels from yard to underneath house. Smart little critters...............I HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM: I have rats in my house, What should I do?
Forget the poison, get sticky traps. They can't get loose from them and can be easily disposed of. Rats are smart and learn to avoid poison after one dies. Same for live traps. They never seem to catch on to sticky traps though. Buy at the super market and bait with a bit of Peanut Butter.
go to a feed store and get poison blocks. Actually, you are better off getting a professional exterminator to trap them, when rats die in the walls it smells for up to three weeks.
Some details, please. Where do you live, house or apartment? Did you just move in? Do you have pets?

Can rats live in c&c cages or will they be able to get out of them?

i'm pretty sure that the grids have 1';x1'; squares, so a baby rat could easily escape. only full grown rats couldn't. you would need to construct a lid. also, the hight isn't good. you need it 2 be at least 24 inches.

its probably best not to keep your rats in a C%26amp;C. they mostly only work for guinea pigs. rats can climb! Can rats live in c%26amp;c cages or will they be able to get out of them?
The grids that you use for the cage, have spacing that is far too large for most rats. I once tried to make the rat version of the type of cage, and it ended up being more trouble than it was worth. First off, the spacing was much too large, and even my big boys could fit their heads through. It was also not very steady.

In the end I ended up taking it apart and returning the grids. I took the loss on the items that were not returnable and learned that homemade cages are usually not worth the effort. Can rats live in c%26amp;c cages or will they be able to get out of them?
I think they will be able to get out. Rodents can squeeze themselves through very small holes.

give information like what type of cage and Size (mm, hight ect.)

    and are the good pets???

i was told there like tiny dogsAre rats good as Pets? if they are what do i need?
Yes, they are like little dogs. They are very smart and love attention. They're amazing pets :)

    Stuff you'll need: http://tessastarrsrats.weebly.com/respon鈥?/a>

    Toys: http://tessastarrsrats.weebly.com/toys.h鈥?/a>

    Choosing a rat: http://tessastarrsrats.weebly.com/choosi鈥?/a>

Treats: http://tessastarrsrats.weebly.com/forbid鈥?/a>Are rats good as Pets? if they are what do i need?
As a rat owner, I'd be the first to say that they're amazing little pets! I've had them for years, and always love them to death. If you get a rat, make sure you have somewhere to keep its cage that' out of direct sunlight, but not in the dark, either, make sure you have lots of things for them to chew on and play with! Water bottles, always full of clean, cool water is a must, (always water bottles and never bowls, because they like to overturn their bowls!)

Most pet stores will sell rat food and have particular treats. By necessity (like rabbits and many other rodents, their teeth never stop growing) I suggest flavored wood for chewing on, and wood with things inside, so they have something to earn, you can find both of those things at pet stores, easily! Colors and shapes are very good, as well, as rats are very, very intelligent. I recommend the balls they can walk around the floors on, but make -sure- you get one that's rat-sized and not one for a mouse or hamster or gerbil -- it will be -much- too small.

Insofar as similarities to dogs, rats are fully capable of leaning their names and tricks, like dogs, and they like affection, and attention. Just make sure you have time every day to play with them and you keep fresh, crisp veggies and fruits for treats and snacks, and insofar as cage size make sure your new pet has -lots- of room! Additionally, I do recommend wire cages, with dual levels if you can, rats -love- to climb! And no one likes to be cramped in. I tend to favor fancy blue rats, but have noticed very little difference in particular breed.

Absolutely get one of the little guys though! And enjoy!
rats are amazing pets they are smart, social, rarely bite, and can be litter trained. NEVER GET A CAGE WITH A WIRE FLOOR WILL BRAKE LEGS. below i will give u some sites
http://onemillionrats.com should answer most of your questions, but i'll give you little extra details myself (:

    1. Rats are amazing pets. they are like little tiny dogs. they are also like cats, and people to. they play and love you like a dog. they have the balance like a cat, and the climbing ability, and they have feelings like us. they are such complicated animals (:

    2. cage - for a first time owner wih a budget i suggest - http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js鈥?/a> - i have this for my 2 females at the moment. it is quite large, but i want larger so im looking into cages that can hold 10+ rats. this cage is only $30 and is a perfect starter (: btw it has to be a wired cage. it cannot be an aquarium.

    3. my rats dont like toys, but some do. they usually like bird toys a lot, and the little jungly cat toys. they'll sometimes play with dog toys.

    4. the cage needs to be BIG. the cage needs to be 2 cubic feet per rat. i suggest looking at this - http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.sht鈥?/a> - make sure to change it to inches!

    good luck!

    Owning rats

In my opinion rats are one of the best animals. I have 3 males as of right now and though they stink it is worth it for the most part. If you are thinking of getting rats than this could be helpful.

Lets start with supplies though cheap, rats are rather expensive. You need approximately $70 in just supplies. That doesn鈥檛 include cage! Rats need big cages, like ferret nations and such. Which can be pricey, some people make cages, and claim they鈥檙e the best. I have bought all my cages, but often have to replace them. I have been wanting to make one, but am rather building inclined. I have never even tried, I am creative but not with wood or metal or three dimensional objects. The only reason I am writing this is because when I got rats I knew nothing, since then I research almost constantly.

WITH RATS LITTLE THINGS CAN BE BIG MATTERS, BEDDING ESPECIALLY!

    GOOD BEDDINGS

CAREFRESH- rather expensive, soft, absorbent, barely dusty.

    ASPEN- messy, cheap, somewhat absorbent.

YESTERDAYS NEWS- can be pricey, very absorbent, contains odor well, hard pellets.

    NEVER EVER USE THE FOLLOWING

    PINE

    CLAY CAT LITTER

    CEDAR

    SAWDUST

With some stinky rats you may find it necessary to get Marshal Bi-odor, you spray it in their water, and it helps stop odor, it really works. You can also get this spray at Wal-Mart called Fresh Results, you can clean the cage with it, spray it on the beddings, and it really works. Contrary to what some people say, rats are not really that clean. Sure the rats themselves groom a lot, but they will trash the cage. I used to have to clean the cage every day. That is a lot of bedding! Then I started using BI-odor and the spray. Now I clean it 1-2 times a week, I use yesterdays news.

Well, rats being intelligent need toys, to keep their mind stimulated. Parrot toys work well, climbing ropes are fun, boxes are great. WHEELS- often a waste of money, it is rare a rat will run for more than 5 minutes. Rats are smart and often won鈥檛 even waste their time. Mine found it more entertaining to go to the bathroom on it, than to run on it. Now cages can be difficult, rats need 2 square feet each, more is much, much, much better. I like cages that have large doors and easy maneuvering shelves, rats need to climb to be happy, and hammocks are a great investment.

Though I have 3 rats I recommend only two. Rats require a lot of time out of their cage, which can be hard with a lot of rats. Free ranging especially, to keep head count with more than two can be hard. Yes rats need to be able to leave their cage. You will need a room or large area to let your rats be free in. With careful supervision, rats are naturally curious and always want to get into everything. Rat proofing a room is simple

Make sure no cords are around

    No holes

    No low furniture

    Few hiding places

    Safe

    No dangerous plants

    Doors are sealed

    SUPERVISION IS A NESSESITY

Food is an important aspect of life for a rat. It is best to get a specially formulated rat diet block. If you go to a store to get rat food and come back with seeds, you got the wrong thing. Seeds are high in fat and low in nutrients, not only should seed be treats only, you must also give fresh fruits and vegetables. Rats should have food available to them all day. Good foods are easily found online. I only know a few off the top of my head, those are carrots, peas, apple slices, corn, raw pasta, cooked meat, cooked pasta, whole grain rice, avocado with no skin, ripe bananas, water melon rinds, water melon, cantaloupe fruit only, strawberries, blueberries, and cherries with no pit. Bad food include raw meat, banana peels, raw potato, potato skins, raw sweet potato, dried corn, lettuce has no nutritional value to rats though it won鈥檛 hurt. Rats can be given the occasional dark chocolate chip. It is believed to ease breathing.

Like all pets rats need to have veterinary care also, in getting a rat you are promising to be responsible for a life. Though I completely understand if you have a rat that never gets to see a vet. My mom thinks rats are disposable pets I tried to explain that their not, but she said no vet for the rat. If it is suffering than I will pay to have it put to sleep. So I will not complain if you don鈥檛, I think of it as if you hadn鈥檛 got the rat it would be snake food. So there fore you saved the rats life once already.

No rat hater knows the bond rat owners share with their rats, if only they could see that the relationship is like family. If anyone says rats are gross to you or, they say haven鈥檛 you ever heard of the black plague. If so say have you ever heard of what really caused the plague, or do you have a dog or cat? If they say yes than say, than you should know fleas caused the plague. Not to mention black rats carried the fleas, but brown rats ended it. So who really saved us?

Rats can be taught tricks, such as kiss, beg, come, and walk on two legs. They also ca

How do i tell my landlord i have rats?

Do rats stink up the house?

r rats stinky i think im going to get one but my dad wants to know if there stinky smelly that kind of thingDo rats stink up the house?
they areDo rats stink up the house?
All animals including yourself have some kind of odor.
No they don't. Keep there cage clean and you guys will get along fine.

And if you get one it's your responsibility.
If you never clean their cage yes they are stinky, but other than that they are not and they are very smart animals and can learn to do so many things.
No more than mice or gerbils. And very much less than snakes!
no i have had six...boy rats smell more than girls do and the cage starts to smell if u dont change the liter every week
Rats do not stink they are one of the cleanest rodents they only smell if you do not clean them out they love to be handled and make excellent pets . people get put off because of the wild rats that live in sewers and things they carry all of the nasty germs they are nothing like mice . Mice stink there urine is very strong and leaves a nasty whiff . people also get put off by there tails . I have owned and bred rats for years they make wonderful pets and very clean.
they kinda do i think you would be better off get-en a hamster you can do allot more with them i have one and she is great and friendly too
No they don't as long as you change their bedding
Rats smell the LEAST of all small animals. I have 11 in my room. 7 females in one cage, 2 more in another cage and 2 males in one cage. I try to clean the cages once a week, but sometime it doesn't get done for 2 weeks, and you still cannot smell them.

Males do smell more than females, but they still smell a lot less than hamsters, gerbils or other small animals.

People who say they smell are usually only used to mice and just assume they are like mice who smell bad, but they are SO wrong. Rats are the easiest small animals to keep clean and to handle period.

    I hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!
just keep it's cage clean at least every other day :)
Nada, my sisters gerbils smelled more then my rat.
Nope. Cages need cleaned 1-2 times per week (once MINIMUM) and you can bathe a rat every 3-4 weeks. Your rats health is directly linked to cage cleanliness! I pick girls because they tend to be less musky, but its really up to you. Boys are cuddly, girls are adventurous.

Don't use wood shavings. They release phenol (toxic) when wet. My vet said newspaper is just fine for bedding and cage liner. You can also pick a paper bedding from the pet store.

From another post I made last week:

';There a lot of people in here who are severely miseducated about rats... and probably pets in general. This scares me (as do all stupid people in large groups). There's a big difference between a wild rat and a domestic one... and even wild ones can be tamed to a certain extent if they're caught early enough (before eyes open).

    For those who want to saw EWWWW OMG RAT! RATS ARE NASTY EWWWW, you should promptly go play in traffic or throw yourself off of a very high cliff (bonus points for sharp rocks at the bottom). You're too ignorant to live, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Chances are that you'll never be 100% satisfied or competant with any pet you get, because ALL pets have something disgusting about them (cat vomit/litterbox, dog poop, lizard skin, ANY disease your animal may contract, etc.). For the love and benefit of God and everybody around you, don't make comments about things you know nothing about. If you intend to volunteer your deluded, misguided opinion, at least make sure somebody has the satisfaction of beating it out of you first.';
if you don't keep their cages clean....
Hi. Rats only get smelly if you dont keep there cage clean. I have 14 (3 fosters today and 11 are mine) thats 3 cages full, 7 in one of the cages. I dont have problems with them smelling at all. I wash shlefs down dailey when they pee on them, then alternate the days of changing hammocks and shredded paper.

Only takes less than 5 minutes a day to sort each cage out, normaly do that when there got out for range time.
No, not if they are cleaned out properly and regularly. Once a week depending on how many you have should be fine. Once every 2 weeks is ok too if you have a large enough cage...

If the bedding you give them is hay or straw this tends to reaaally stink! I always used wood shavings, they are much better.

But overall, no, rats do not smell. They are very clean actually. Ferrets have a distinct smell, they emit oils from their skin that makes them smelly. But rats have no smell.

You should get 2 rats, as one will be very lonely. They are very sociable and it is cruel to just keep one. They need a very large cage and fresh fruit and vegetables every day. You should get 2 baby rats as they will be easier to tame when they are young. They are gorgeous animals. I've had many rodents and my rat was the sweetest. She would never bite ever, even when very scared, or when you put your fingers in through the bars. She was brown and white.

Email me if you need any info on them.

    Good luck!
Only if you don't clean the cage regularly!
We feed 'feeder' rats to our boa - we get them in a box from the petstore %26amp; can't wait for our snake to get rid of them. We don't keep the rats either, we get them straight home %26amp; the snake eats them right a way. They smell awful!

*Wow! Didn't realize I said anything that deserved all the 'thumbs down'. You people who gave me the downs should realize that a snake has to eat too. It's nature! And as far as the rats stinking when we bring them home from the pet store, maybe ours stink because they're 'feeder' rats (this is what they tell us to ask for when we go in, not just any rat). Kudos to those of you that love them %26amp; don't have a problem with stink. Me personally, I'll stick with the snake : )
