Can rats have paper with ink on?

i know rats love to go in 'digging boxes' and was thinking of giving my rats one.

it would be easiest to just shred up old letters and stuff and use that (i know newspaper is bad) but i was wondering if this would be bad too??

i dont want to harm my rattiies.....but there is no chance my mum would let me shred un used paper and i just give them toilet paper for bedding.

would this be ok?? if not what could i use??

thanks....Can rats have paper with ink on?
No please don't use paper with written stuff or ink because when they chew the paper that has ink or pen and pencil written they could get sick because those stuff will harm them. Just buy bedding at any pets storeCan rats have paper with ink on?
Ink isn't lethal, although obviously you don't want them eating it. I would start out using brown construction paper (the ';safest';) for their box until they get used to it and realize that it's inedible. After that I'd say go ahead and use paper that's been printed on and newspaper. My rats have been plenty exposed to them and do shred them, with no ill effects yet. I highly doubt that ink contains many toxins and poisonous bits, considering how often people are exposed to it.

As someone else said, your rats will probably like soil more, although it will mean dirty rats. My rats ingnored the bucket full of shredded newspaper in favour digging up my potted plants. Darn creatures.
The ONLY type of ink safe for animals is soy ink. Many newspapers are actually switching to this environmentally friendly alternative, so SOME newspapers will be harmless. Your best bet is to actually call and ask the newspaper company about the ink they use. DO NOT use letters or pen ink type of paper, or anything glossy (unlike newspaper which is rough). And even things like paper towels and toilet paper are harmful because they all have been bleached to become white. Soy ink newspapers are actually the safes of all paper, however they might smear on the rats and turn them grey.

And an even better material for a digging box is actual soil! I don't think paper is nearly as fun as dirt and grass, my rats love it! Read the instructions here http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm#diggin鈥?/a>
no the ink is bad, and can potentially kill them or if you are mating them cause the babies to have birth defects, you can use paper towels for them or toilet paper, also pet stores sell a form of recycled shreded paper that you can use just for this, however magazines, letters, and handwritten items all pose potential harm, and for your rats sake dont chance it.
I wouldn't recommend newspaper but only because of the amount of ink, if you had the time and patience to cut off the edges then maybe. But lets face it, even rat owners have something resembling a life.

I use torn up kitchen and toiled paper with wool, bits of fabric, cardboard, anything really. The wool is a favourite with the rats who tend not to dig but to fall asleep in it.

Try looking through this link, I've found it really helpfull when I've had questions and they have some great ideas for other ratty toys.
